Good guide.

Although a trumpeted inlet will flow air much better than a sharp edge.
so it might be worth leaving the top part in there, but I doubt theres much difference between in and out.

did think about that, although the tube is very narrow at that point. the edge of the intake on the lid isnt that sharp anyway, still quite smooth.

noticed lately that a lot of people are asking how to drill an airbox.

drilling the airbox alone wont give any power gains, although many people say that it feels more "responsive". ive tested a corsa gsi with a standard airbox and a drilled airbox on a rolling road and there was no difference at all!

There is one modification that you can do to your airbox to give small gains, and that is to de-restrict it. this is how its done:

take off the lid of the airbox

if you look in the lid you will see this

the tube coming from the top is a restrictive part of the airbox, it has a very narrow neck. to remove it, tap it gently with a hammer and it will slide off.

the next part to remove is inside the actual box itself. its the piece of tube that is bent 90' in the pic.

the purpose of this tube is to throw any water, dirt and grit into the side of the airbox away from the filter, but if you are willing to replace the filter regularly (or if u have a re-usable filter such as a K&N panel then clean it regularly) then this isnt a problem.

remove it by pushing the "lug" from the front of the box and sliding the tube upwards towards the top of the box. it can take a bit of force, but take your time.

some tubes are held to the bottom of the box with a rivet, try prying the tube from it, it doesnt matter if it snaps, you will be throwing it away!

re-assemble the box, and refit to the car. job done. dont expect huge gains from this, i only saw a gain of 3 bhp with this mod done, and that was on a highly tuned gsi. although it should give a slightly more responsive feel, and compliment other mods.

if you do wish to drill you box as well, (wont give any gain at all, but sounds nice:lol:) heres how to do it:

take a 20mm drill bit

drill holes in the bottom of the box away from the engine

and on the side away from the engine

a cold air feed to the bottom of the box will also be an advantage.

if youve got an earlier model car then you can just prise off the bottom of the box, and you wont have to drill it. again a cold air feed will be an advantage.

with any of the above, a free flowing panel filter will help as well, heres a K&N one insid my box from the gsi

hope this helps:thumbs:
