Anyone got any GOOD links for instructions on how to clean out the relief valve on a C20Xe engine? Is it much of a job? I want to do this in a couple of weeks time on the next oil change to try and help stop the noisey lifters on startup.

well its a lil tappety on start up but its generally quiet, it runs well, and it dont smoke at all, maybe a lil when bouncing off the limiter that is a lil black at the worst of times.

The meter showed that the switch or valve is it??? was opening and closing correctly as it was using n not using current?

The low pressure light comes on at 4psi IIRC so if it is on because of low oil pressure your engine is probably already fucked! You should also have a very rattly engine so if it appears to be fine aside from the light your probably ok.

The relief valve is a small piston and a spring, the force of the spring keeps the piston closed at low oil pressure (idle), then as revs rise the increased revolutions of the oil pump create more oil pressure, which then moves the piston that reduces the oil pressure to stop the pressure from rising to high.

Sometimes, if there is debris in the oil, the piston can get jammed open, so that at idle there is no oil pressure, but at higher revs you still get good oil pressure.

When I went around Castle Combe in my Nova I came off the track and noticed I had no oil pressure. The relief valve had stuck and later discovered that the big end bearings were scored, I think the cheap bearings didn't like the hard use and so shed metal, this then jammed the relief valve in its bore. Could have happened the other way around, but not really any reason for the relief valve to jam unless there are bits in the oil.

tested the current and it says the switch is operating ok,its going on and off...im after fixing the car by tomoro nite hopefully, i just need ideas what else to check, where is the release valve n how easy to change? expensive? the car tends to get cold on the temp gauge when u drive n go bk to higher revs to warm itself up, does that help diagnose it better people?

could be as simple as a knackered switch or as lee says the pressure release valve. if you take the oil cap off can you see oil spraying around

thats wot i was wondering, the car itself seems fine tho :( bummer.think i tracked down the sensor to the bk of the engine underneath the car, the loom has been crimped together to mate up with the sxi loom so was gonna get multimeter on it. where is the pressure relief valve? any other symptoms i shud be looking for? shud i discover religion?
