how strange, i had my cambelt changed an about 2 weeks later i started to get a rattle from the cam belt cover area. it hasnt got any worse but is constant and rather annoying, am currently waiting for the guy who done it to have a look. i got it booked into local Vaux delership on friday so if i find out what it is i'll let you know just incase its the same thing.

{edit} i also get the first thing in the morning/cold squealing noise monkey magic is talking about, even after changing all the belts :(

'96 1.4 sport by the way

My Gsi has had this contionous squealling sound for few mins after start up from the same area u described mate for the last month!! think my cambelt/alternator belt is about to snap!!

and i think a bearing or somthing has gone in the alternator motor coz its making this high pitched whining sound which gets louder as i rev harder!! sounds kinda good tho, like a supercharger:D

Greasemonkey is absolutely correct regards importance of cam belt changes! Dont learn the hard way like my mate!

The engine you have is every 40000 miles or every 5 years, which ever is first. But as said, if it needs doing then do it regardless of the recommended intervals.

one more thing it might be is the water pump, this normally runs of the cambelt, when that wears out it makes funny noises then jams and the belt snaps, just let the garage have a look, fingers crossed it will be something stupid.

cambelt change would be about £60 i would have thought, thats what i paid when i had one done, i do my own now, changed the cambelt 3 times on my GSI, your car might not have been due a cambelt change so they might not have done it, but that dosnt mean it dont need doing, other things that make a noise in that area are rollers and tensioners that the belt goes round, if its these then same applies get them and your belt changed, if in dought change it, thats the rule with cambelts

my car has a full serive at garage 2 months ago, do you think they changed it? if i really need the cam belt changed, how much would it normally cost? thx

if you have never done this kind of work and aint confident i would get a garage to do it, you got to be so carful the engine is timed up correctly when puttin the belt back on, if not it will be like the belt has snapped the pistons will hit your valves, this belt is what stops the pistongs making contact with the valves, its very very important this is changed at its regular serive intervalls, mine has to be done every 36'000
